My "name" is Minty and I am a graphic designer, artist, and video editor who works on simple projects usually using the rubberhose art style. Born on January 25, 2001 in California.
I am mostly a graphic designer and video editor. I work on personal projects that use video editing skills and have been studying to try and improve my craftmanship. I am willing to work and gain experience so that I can further better my skills and crafts.
Why rubberhose?
- Because I find the art style to be very goofy, fun, and stretchy, almost like clay. And like clay, I can move my characters to do very weird yet liberating stuff and ideas since they are toons.
What inspired you to try drawing, graphic design, and video editing?
- For drawing I just found it to be pretty fun, but it clicked for me when I saw a couple of video games and some old cartoons from childhood. Graphic design was a happy accident cause I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life until I was assigned a graphic design class in college and it just really clicked for me to the point where I wanted to pursue it as my job. As for video editing, I got into it by looking and watching YouTube videos and thinking it would be a fun project when I have the spare time.
There is something beautiful when looking back at old cartoons from the 1930s. From the movement and design of the characters to the incredible watercolor backgrounds and this feeling of a Wild West of imagination with some of the ideas they were able to create and move on the screen. While it does have some very offensive and outdated ideas, it does not lessen the creativity and effort that is shown in the cartoon. It's the art style and effort that inspired me to draw and create pieces using a rubberhose look to them as well as creating simple but unique backgrounds. It's all fun which is something I try to replicate in my projects.
Though it may look like the pieces are made digitally, in reality, they are all done by hand and edited later in Photoshop. Just like how cartoons were made back then, I mainly use a light graphite pencil to sketch out the subject or item. Once they are finished, I draw over the sketch with an ink pen. Once the line art is done I take a photo of it and transfer it to Photoshop Mix on my phone, edit out the garbage area, place the respective colors needed for the subject, and edit them in as well. When the subject is fully colored, I move on to the fun part, the background. Editing and implementing colors that could fit the scenario, rearranging and merging the different hues to create new props for the scene, which I could use in later projects if they look good enough. This process is done to replicate how old cartoons were made back in the day, with people needing to sketch, ink, and paint the backgrounds just to create one moment of a short cartoon. Studios like Fleisher animation, early Disney, to even modern media that use the art style as inspiration such as Studio MDHR or Joey Drew Studios for games such as Cuphead and Bendy and the Ink Machine, are just some examples of inspiration.
The art style is only the beginning as there are still more projects to come featuring these recurring characters, such as videos and a few attempts at simple animations. They will be fully voiced, have some basics of animation, and more importantly, keep the fun at its center.
